I have a personal connection to this foundation. I was blessed to be raised attending a United Methodist Camp, and feel very strongly that I gained many leadership skills through those experiences. I also experienced my personal call to camp ministry at camp while serving as a volunteer leader. What is amazing is how many others have shared similar stories. Camping has served as a source of inspiration for countless individuals and led them into many different careers. I know of doctors, clergy, educators, and camp professionals who all became leaders in their fields, as well as deeply spiritual due to experiences at camp.
With the knowledge that camp experiences can be so impactful and long lasting, I feel very strongly that I must be intentional in the way I interact with guests and staff. Part of my duties as a site director is to foster the passion I see in folks, whether the passion is for camp, the church, or any number of fields. This is because we want passionate folks of strong spiritual fabric leading in all areas of life.
One of our most successful initiatives for leadership development is the Resident counselor program. Working as a team, Camp Magruder, Suttle Lake Camp, and Camp Latgawa sponsor a team of counselors that visit each of the three sites throughout the summer. These resident counselors receive additional training and serve as professional role models to the volunteers and campers they work alongside. 2018 will be our third season of this program, and we have already seen Resident Counselor Alumni continue to grow and take on additional leadership roles through out our conference and camps.
Fostering leaders for the future of our church and our world is a sacred responsibility, and we are dedicated to faithfully carrying out this duty.
