Reflections on the Seven Foundations for Camp & Retreat Ministries

Foundation 6: Partner with Local churches and Church-Related Organizations

by Sam Grainger, Director of Camp Latgawa

Camp Latgawa is fortunate to be the southern Oregon representative of the Camp and Retreat Ministries of the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Due to this connectional system of our conference and churches, Camp Latgawa is able to reap the benefits of the experiences and knowledge of a wide range of people from across our connection. And while we do receive support, and guests, from United Methodist Churches across our conference, even beyond our immediate area, we also hope that Camp Latgawa has something unique to offer all of our churches in our connection!

This connection between our sites and churches is what allows each camp and retreat center to be successful.  Specific ways Camp Latgawa has benefited from this connection include the passing on and receiving of equipment such as canoes, beds, and vehicles, and sharing talented, passionate leaders.

Our global church also has several agencies that do important and necessary work for our world. One such agency is the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the denomination's official emergency response arm. It is one of the first organizations on the ground after a natural disaster or humanitarian crisis and often stays longer than any other. This connection to UMCOR and being witnesses to its good work has encouraged leaders associated with Camp Latgawa to create a program that supports its important global mission.

Camp Latgawa is starting a Mission-focused Family Camp next year. This program will include an opportunity for campers to assemble UMCOR kits that would be delivered by UMCOR to natural disaster areas. If you are interested in participating in or volunteering in the creation of this event, please let us know at
Camp Latgawa is glad to be a part of this connection, and to continue to support the work of your home congregation and the greater United Methodist Church.

Grace and Peace,
